2015 in review

The WordPress.com stats helper monkeys prepared a 2015 annual report for this blog.

Here’s an excerpt:

Madison Square Garden can seat 20,000 people for a concert. This blog was viewed about 67,000 times in 2015. If it were a concert at Madison Square Garden, it would take about 3 sold-out performances for that many people to see it.

Shifting from Windows Phone to Android

If you are a Windows Phone user and are planning on shifting to an android phone soon, we have some advice for you. Having been a windows mobile and windows phone user for around 6 years, shifting to android was a big leap.

The first problem was the hassle of adding accounts. Setting up a windows phone is way easier than android. Checking emails is easier on windows phone as the interface is minimalist, however in a few days you will get used to checking your email on android.

The second problem is the keyboard. The keyboard isn’t really the best and while you can add third party ones, we advise against it as they can collect whatever sensitive information you type.

The third issue is battery life. Unlike Windows Phone, here the system hogs the battery.

Now here is some good news. Yes, we know most people hunt for android apps on windows phone, well, we are doing the reverse.

  1. The full Microsoft office suite is available for free

2) Instagram is there but we preferred 6tag(This app is one of the greatest on WP)

3) You have various painting apps, but once again, fantasia painter on WP is tough to replace.

4) Surprisingly IE was more comfortable to use than chrome is but its not a deal breaker.

Over all, we managed to find substitute apps. One immediately realizes that windows phone is simply under rated. The ease of use, the clean interface, the hassle free email and office. In short for a business user or for productivity Windows Phone is the one to go for. For gaming, lots of social networking, customization etc an android phone is recommended. So unless you really are either bored of WP and want to try something new or have such a need, stick to WP.

Monetary Management Showdown

It’s been a while..

We are back with a competitive showdown between two expenses and money management apps for Windows Phone or should I say Windows Mobile 😀

Monetal vs. Wallet Watch

Both apps I must admit, are unique in their own regard. What one lacks, the other compensates for that. Rather than listing down features of each app, I would list the pros and cons of each to give you’ll a heading regarding which one to finally download.

Both apps, are by far the best Money Managers on the Store and it is clearly indicated in their reviews and ratings too.

Wallet Watch

Pros:

  • Free (No paid version)
  • Lots of Categories of Expenses
  • Multiple live tiles available for individual functionalities.
  • Bill split calculator
  • Simple and efficient main screen layout improving the overall usage experience

Cons:

  • To many transitions sometimes for a simple task
  • No option for multiple accounts like (Salary, Savings etc..)

(Scroll down further for Monetal)

Monetal

Pros:

  •  Supports multiple accounts
  • The main screen directly displays and increment and decrement alongside the balance, which makes it easier and quicker to add data
  • Graphical analysis is good to look at 😛

Cons:

  • Premium version available, which adds functionalities for live tiles, more categories for types of transaction.
  • Feels glitch-y to use sometimes.
  • Comparatively less customization in layout than Wallet Watch.
  • Advertisements (‘Nuff Said)

Readit for Windows Phone(Reddit)

Readit is an alternative app for Reddit. You can add multiple accounts, save posts, add friends, send direct messages, post pictures, URLs, text and subscribe to threads.

The app supports notifications for direct messages. The app has a clean interface which is clutter free, making it easy to use. We’ve been using this app for over 2 months with no issues. Anyone who likes Reddit, or wants to read interesting new, learn new things(They have a thread for nearly everything, probably that’s why it is called the “Front Page of The Internet”.

We recommend this app as a must have for people who enjoy reading/learning or need something to pass time while bored or travelling.

Did we mention that its free?

Windows Store

Proxy mobile number which also works on whatsapp!!!

AppCyla

textPlus Free Text  TextMeUPDATE(3 OCT 2015)

The above 2 apps may generate numbers which are not recognized by whatsapp. We tried TextNow. This worked and allowed us to register on whatsapp. TextNow has calling features on Windows Phone too.

Check app availability for your device at https://www.textnow.com/downloads

Get a proxy number to use whatsapp on!!!

This along with many other articles on going anonymous and going off the the grid using proxy identities will be explained in the upcoming posts in our new section “Off the Grid”.

Many a times we are asked by apps, signups etc to give a valid mobile number so as to receive the confirmation code(eg snapchat,Gmail etc).
The problem is that we may not want to part with our number or that the service is for only US residents and you need a US number.
There’s a workaround for this.
There are apps like TextMe and also TextPlus which can be used.

Total Commander for Windows Phone

Total Commander is the latest must have app for Windows Phone users. Apart from your standard file browser for files stored in the device memory and on the removable sd card, it is loaded with a lot more features.

You can add an FTP server, your Google Drive, OneDrive, Dropbox, LAN, WebDav. You can also receive files on your device using WiFi. There is also a pack and unpack option for zipped files

Now instead of 8 different apps to perform the above functions, only one is needed. The app is available for free on the store.

Stagefright Bug

The Android Stagefright bug is not squashed. Although Google released patches for Hangouts and messenger, there are many ways a malicious mp4 file can open on your device. Zimperium has released the source code of the bug, which allows a person to generate a malicious mp4 file and use the exploit.

WE ADVICE USERS TO AVOID OPENING MP4 FILES FROM UNKNOWN SOURCES.

Here is what they said:

During the months of June and July, Joshua J. Drake developed a working exploit to prove the Stagefright vulnerability can allow Remote Code Execution (RCE) without user interaction. We are pleased to finally make this code available to the general public so that security teams, administrators, and penetration testers alike may test whether or not systems remain vulnerable.

What follows is a python script that generates an MP4 exploiting the ‘stsc’ vulnerability otherwise known as CVE-2015-1538 (#1). This is one of the most critical vulnerabilities we reported in the Stagefright library. The expected result of the exploit is a reverse shell as the media user. As detailed in Joshua Drake’s Black Hat and DEFCON presentations, this user has access to quite a few groups such as inet, audio, camera, and mediadrm. These groups allow an attacker to take pictures or listen to the microphone remotely without exploiting additional vulnerabilities.

This exploit has several caveats. First, it is not a generic exploit. We only tested it to work on a single device model. We tested this exploit on a Nexus running Android 4.0.4. Also, due to variances in heap layout, this is not a 100% reliable exploit by itself. We were able achieve 100% reliability when delivered through an attack vector that allowed multiple attempts. Finally, this vulnerability was one of several that was neutered by GCC 5.0’s ‘new[]’ integer overflow mitigation present on Android 5.0 and later.

This means that the code is only tested for Android 4.0.4 Ice Cream Sandwich, and users on Android 5.1 Lollipop or higher are not vulnerable to the released code for now.

While we do have the code for testing purposes, we do not intend on sharing it as Zimperium has already done so.

“Exploits don’t hack people, people hack people,” Drake, Zimperium.

Android 6.0 is Marshmallow!!

marshmallow

Google has unveiled the name of its next version of Android as Marshmallow.

Whats new? well, while its now in the final developer preview stage, here are some of the features:

Google Photos:Google Photos provides unlimited free storage for up to 16 MP photos and 1080p video

Adoptable Storage Devices: formats external storage like internal storage. App and personal data can be moved between the devices internal storage and its “adopted” storage source.

Android M RAM manager: Google has introduced a new RAM manager

New app drawer

Auto Backup and Restore for Apps

Power and Charging:  a new function known as Doze to improve device standby time. Android M also supports USB Type-C which provides faster charging and lets you charge other devices using this device(while this is great, most often our phones don not have enough charge to survive the day themselves, so this feature is useless unless we get more efficient devices and better batteries.)

Fingerprint support: Unlock phones and to make purchases in real-life or within Play Store apps.

Mobile Payment: NFC tap to pay.

App Permissions: Users can now choose to accept or deny individual permissions(Windows 10 mobile already has this feature)

Our Conclusion: While this version seems to have simplified the ease of use, we noticed that a lot of the features overlap with Windows 10 mobile and iPhone. However we can draw a proper conclusion only once the consumer update is pushed to device. Till then enjoy this video:
